Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is an infection of a woman’s reproductive organs and is mostly caused by infections such as Chlamydia Trachomatis , Bacteria Vaginosis, Syphilis and Gonococcal infection, Chronic Candidiasis/Yeast infection. PID is the chief cause of fallopian tubal blockage in women which is a major cause of infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
PID may not cause symptoms or may present with mild symptoms like abnormal bleeding, discharge and most common symptom of PID is lower abdominal pain which usually worsen during intercourse , bowel motion or urination . In some women PID causes long standing fever. PID is diagnosed through the approach of abdomino-pelvic ultrasound scan which indicates accumulation of significant fluid in the Pouch of Douglas .
